עֵץ plur. עֵצִים, const. עֲצֵי m.
(1) a tree (Arabic عَصًا a staff, a bone; compare the Gr. ὄζος, a branch, and ὄστεον (Sansc. asthi), Lat. hasta. For wood there is commonly used in Arabic the cognate form عُودُ Hebr. עֵץ follows the analogy of the verb עָצָה to be hard, firm. Chald. with the letters softened, has אָע wood). עֵץ הַחַיִּים tree of life (see חַי ), Genesis 2:9. Often collect, trees. עֵץ פְּרִי fruitbearing trees, Genesis 1:11.
(2) wood, specially of a wooden post, stake, gibbet, Genesis 40:19; Deuteronomy 21:22; Joshua 10:26 used of a wooden idol, Jeremiah 2:27.
