Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

תָּהֳלָה fem. ἅπ. λεγόμ. Job 4:18, which the LXX. render σκολιόν τι. Vulg. pravum quid. Targ. iniquity. As to the etymology, there are various opinions of interpreters; but the Hebrews, and amongst them Kimchi, long ago saw the truth, taking תָּהֳלָה as fem. from תֹּהֶל or תֹּהַל (from the root הָלַל, like תֶּמֶס, תֶּבֶל, תֹּרֶן, from מָסַס, בָּלַל, רָנַן). Nor is there any necessity for Dagesh in ל, compare מֶכֶס (from כָּסַס), f. מִכְסָה; see Lehrg. page 503. Hence prop. it is folly (see הָלַל No. 4 ); hence sin, compare נָכָל. Others regard as the root وهل to err, to go astray; whence وَهْلُ error, and hence they derive the noun תּוֹהֲלָה, תֹּהֲלָה; whence תָּהֳלָה, as vice versâ הֹעֲלָה from הֹעֳלָה Judges 6:28 זֹעֲמָה from זָעֳמָה Numbers 23:7.
