שָׁגָה (compare שָׁגַג)
(1) to wander, to go astray, Ezekiel 34:6. (Syr. ܫܓܳܐ id.) Followed by מִן to wander from a way, and metaph. from the divine commands, Proverbs 19:27; Psalms 119:21, 118 Psalms 119:118.
(2) to reel through wine (compare תָּעָה) Isaiah 28:7; Proverbs 20:1 used of a man intoxicated with love, Proverbs 5:20, “why dost thou reel my son with a strange woman,” i.e. intoxicated with her love; Proverbs 5:14.
(3) to err, to transgress, through inadvertence, 1 Samuel 26:21.
Hiphil, to cause to wander (the blind in their way), Deuteronomy 27:18. Metaph. to cause to go astray (from the divine commands), followed by מִן Psalms 119:10 to lead astray, Job 12:16.
Derivatives, מִשְׁגֶּה, compare also מְשׁוּגָה, שְׁגִיאָה.
II. שָׁגָה perhaps i.q. שָׂגָא, שָׂגָה to be great, the letters שׁ and שׂ being interchanged; compare שָׂאַר and שָׁאַר. Hence
Piel (unused), to magnify, to extol with praises, i.q. Syr. ܣܰܓܝܺ to celebrate, to praise, ܣܘܽܓܺܝܬܐܳ a hymn, and the noun of Piel, שִׁגָּיוֹן a hymn, which see.
