Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אַרְמוֹן m. Pl. const. אַרְמְנוֹת a fortress, palace, so called from being lofty (see the root); Isaiah 25:2, 32:14 Proverbs 18:19, etc. אַרְמוֹן בֵּית הַמֶּלֶךְ 1 Kings 16:18 Ki. 15:25, is “the citadel of the palace,” its innermost part, the highest and strongest. None of the ancients rendered the word women’s apartment, as very many of late have done, after J. D. Michaëlis (Suppl. 128), compare أُرُمُ i.q. حُرُمُ chambers (Gol. p. 78), and حَرَمُ women’s apartment, Harem; but there is no need for us to leave the simple explanation first given. Used of the citadel of a hostile capital, Isaiah 25:2.
