 [רָבַע] verb lie stretched out, lie down (Aramaic form of רָבַץ (q. v.); Late Hebrew רבע usually of copulation, chiefly unnatural; yet compare also Sabean רבע abide, encamp, settle, DHM ZMG xxix (1875), 593, Arabic abide, dwell) —

Qal only Infinitive: suffix רִבְעִי Psalm 139:3 my lying down (for repose, opposed to אָרְחִי); elsewhere (H) for copulation (woman with beast) לְרִבְעָה אֹתָהּ Leviticus 20:16, but read אִתָּהּ (suffix of beast) Dr-Wh Kö Synt. 226 e, compare Bae Berthol (and Dr 2 Samuel 13:14); לְרִבְעָהּ 2 Samuel 18:23, read לְרִבְעָה (compl. omitted; see id.).

Hiph`il Imperfect 2 masculine singular בְּהֶמְתְּךָ לֹא תַרְבִּיעַכִּלְאַיִם Leviticus 19:19 (H) thy cattle thou shalt not cause to (let) lie down (i.e. breed) in two kinds.

(2) to lie with any one, followed by an acc. used of bestiality, Leviticus 18:23, 20:16.

Hiphil, to cause or suffer to gender, Levit. 19:19.


רָבַע denom. from רְבַע (with א prosthet. אַרְבַּע) four. Part. pass. רָבוּעַ foursquare, Exodus 27:1, 28:16. Part. Pu. מְרֻבָּע id., 1 Kings 7:31.

I. רֶבַע m. with suff. רִבְעִי lying down, Psalms 139:3 from the root רָבַע No. 1.

II. רֶבַע (from אַרְבַּע four)

(1)  a fourth part, Exodus 29:40. Hence

(2) a side (one of four sides), Ezekiel 1:8, 17 Ezekiel 1:17, 43:17.

(3) [Rebah], pr.n. of a king of the Midianites, Numbers 31:8; Joshua 13:21.
