עָזַז fut. יָעֹז inf. עָזוֹז
(1) to strengthen, to make strong. (Arab. عَزَّ fut. O). Followed by לְ. to make secure. Ecclesiastes 7:19, הַחָכְמָה תָּעֹז לֶחָכָם וגו׳ “wisdom makes the wise man stronger than ten leaders,” i.e. protects him more than ten leaders could. (Compare עֹז No. 2, and מָעֹז.) See also this active signification in the name עָזַזְיָהוּ.
(2) to become strong, to be made strong. Judges 3:10, וַתָּֽעָז יָדוֹ עַל־כּוּשַׁן “and his hand became stronger than Cushan,” i.e. he conquered him; Judges 6:2. Daniel 11:12, וְלֹא יָעוֹז “and he shall not conquer.” Psalms 9:20; Proverbs 8:28, בַּעֲזוֹז עֵינוֹת תְּהוֹם “when the fountains of the sea were strong,” i.e. flowed forth violently; compare מַיִּם עַזִּים Nehemiah 9:11; Isaiah 43:16. (Syr. ܥܰܙ Ethpa. to boil forth).
(3) to be strong, robust, powerful, Psalms 89:14 to show oneself such, 68:29 52:9.
Hiphil הֵעֵז followed by פָּנִים to strengthen one’s countenance, i.e. to put on a shameless look, Proverbs 7:13 followed by בְּ 21:29. Compare עַז No. 2, עֹז No. 2.
