Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

סְנַפִּיר quadrilit. the fin of fishes, Levit. 11:9 Deuteronomy 14:9. The origin is uncertain. It may seem however to come from the triliteral root, נָפַר, نفر to flee, to hasten, Piel, to propel; with a sibilant prefixed. Comp. Lehrg. p. 862. [“Perhaps from زنفل to hasten, and نفر to flee.”]
