 [סָכַל] verb be foolish, or a fool, usually in moral or spititual sense (Syriac Aph`el act foolishly; foolish, etc., ᵑ7סְכַל derived species, act foolishly; סַכְלָא fool; Christian-Palestinian Aramaic , Aph`el = ἁμαρτάνω, also derivatives Schw Idioticon 62; Assyrian saklu, perhaps foolish, Dl HWB 498; Aramaic סְכַל know, be intelligent, cause to understand, etc. (derived species), compare שׂכל; Mei Chrest. Targ. derives both these opposite meanings from Arabic form, likeness. Gerber178 thinks Hebrew verb denominative); —

Piel Imperfect יְסַכֵּל Isaiah 44:25, Imperative סַכֶּלנָֿא 2 Samuel 15:31, make foolish, turn into foolishness.

Niph`al Perfect 2 masculine singular נִסְכַּלְתָּ 2 Chronicles 16:9; נִסְכָּ֑לְתָּ 1 Samuel 13:13; 1 singular נִסְכַּלְתִּי 2 Samuel 24:10 = 1 Chronicles 21:8, act or do foolishly.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

סָכַל not used in Kal, i.q. כָּסַל No. 3, Syr. and Zab. ܣܟܰܠ to be foolish, which must be carefully distinguished from the verb, which is similar in sound, שָׂכַל.

Piel, to make foolish, i.e. vain, fruitless, to frustrate, e.g. a counsel or purpose, 2 Samuel 15:31; Isaiah 44:25. Compare הוֹלֵל.

Hiphil, to act foolishly, with the addition of עֲשׂוֹ Genesis 31:28 without it, 1 Samuel 26:21. (Aram. Aph. id.)

Niphal

(1) to act foolishly (prop. to shew oneself foolish), 1 Samuel 13:13; 2 Chronicles 16:9.

(2) to act wickedly, 2 Samuel 24:10; 1 Chronicles 21:8, comp. כְּסִיל, נָבָל, etc. Hence [the following words.]
