מַרְעֲלָה (“trembling,” perhaps “earthquake”), [Maralah], pr.n. of a town in the tribe of Zebulun, Joshua 19:11.
I. מַרְפֵּא m. and מַרְפֵּה Jeremiah 8:15 (from the root רָפָא to heal).
(1) the healing (of a disease), 2 Chronicles 21:18, 36:16 Jeremiah 14:19.-Hence
(2) refreshing, both of the body, Proverbs 4:22, 16:24 and of the mind, Proverbs 12:18, 13:17.
(3) deliverance (from calamity), Proverbs 6:15, 29:1 Mal. 3:20.
(4) remedy, Jeremiah 33:6.
II. מַרְפֵּא (from the root רָפָא=רָפָה to relax), prop. relaxed mind; hence tranquillity of mind, meekness; Proverbs 14:30, לֵב מַרְפֵּא “a meek heart;” Proverbs 15:4 מַרְפֵּא לָשׁוֹן “tranquillity of tongue,” i.e. gentle, modest speech; Ecclesiastes 10:4, “gentleness hinders great offences.”
