Qal Imperfect 2 masculine singular תִּזְמֹר Leviticus 25:3,4of pruning a vineyard (כֶּרֶם; H).
Niph`al Imperfect יִזָּמֵר Isaiah 5:6 be pruned, subject כֶּרֶם ""(יֵעָדֵרׅ.
זָמַר [“properly it would seem “to pluck”], to prune, especially the vine, Leviticus 25:3, Leviticus 25:4. Hence מְזַמֶּרֶת snuffers. (Arab. زبر to prune a vine, the letters מ and ב being interchanged).
Niphal pass. Isaiah 5:6.
Piel זִמֵּר
(1) to sing, properly (as has been well observed by Albert Schultens and Bishop Lowth), to cut off the discourse or sentence, or song; to express a song divided according to rhythmical numbers, (compare قَِريضُ a song, properly a discourse divided, from قرض to cut, to cut off. Arab. زَمَرَ I. and II.; Syr. ܙܡܰܪ and ܙܰܡܪܶ; Eth. Conj. II. id.). Followed by a dative of the person whom the song celebrates, Judges 5:3; Psalms 9:12, 30:5 47:7 and an acc. Psalms 47:7, 66:2 68:5, 33 Psalms 68:33.
(2) to play on a musical instrument [or to sing so accompanied], ψάλλειν. Psalms 33:2, 71:22.
(3) to dance (Arabic زمر), which is also done according to rhythmical numbers, and is connected with singing and music (comp. צָחַק and שָׂחַק). Hence זֶמֶר. [It may be questioned whether זִמֵּר ever really meant to dance; this signification seems to be merely imagined in order to connect זֶמֶר with its root.]
Derivatives, זָמִיר, זְמִיר, זְמוֹרָה, מִזְמוֹר, מַזְמֵרָה, מְזַמֶּרֶת and also those which immediately follow.
זְמָר [emph. זְמָרָא] m. Chald. music of instruments, Daniel 3:5,, 10, 15.
