Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

דָּמָה (Aram. דְּמָא, ܕܡܐܳ), [fut. יִדְמֶה], to be like, to become like, followed by לְ, Psalms 102:7, 144:4 Song of Solomon 2:9, 7:8 אֶל Ezekiel 31:8. With a pleonast. dat. Song of Solomon 2:17, דְּמֵה־לךָ דוֹדִי לִצְבִי “be thou like, my love, to a hart.” Song of Solomon 8:14.

Niphal, to become like, followed by כְּ, Psalms 49:13, 21 Ps4 9:21, acc. Ezekiel 32:2. [In Thes. all the occurrences in Niphal, except the last cited, are referred to No. II.]

Piel דִּמָּה

(1) to compare, to liken, followed by אֶל Isaiah 40:18, 25 Isaiah 40:25לְ 46:4 Song of Solomon 1:9; Lamentations 2:13, מָה אֲרַמֶּה־לָךְ “what shall I compare to thee?” Hence to use parables, i.q. מָשׁל, מִשֵּׁל. Hosea 12:11, בְּיַד הַנְּבִיאִים אֲדַמֶּה “through the prophets I have used parables” (it is better to take it thus as required by the context, than “I have destroyed,” i.e. announced destruction).

(2) to liken in one’s mind, to imagine, to think. Psalms 50:21, דִּמִּיתָ הֱוֹת־אֶהְיֶה כָמוֹךָ “thou thoughtest I was altogether such a one as thyself,” Esther 4:13; Isaiah 10:7.

(3) to think, to purpose, to meditate doing something, Numbers 33:56; Judges 20:5, אֹתִי דִּמּוּ לַהֲרֹג “they thought to have slain me.” Isaiah 14:24; 2 Samuel 21:5, הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר כִּלָּנוּ וַאֲשֶׁר דִּמָּה לָנוּ “the man who destroyed us and who meditated (evil) against us.”

(4) to remember, Psalms 48:10, דִּמִּינוּ אֱלֹהִים חַםְדְּךָ “we have remembered, O God, thy loving kindness.”

Hithpael, 1 fut. אֶדַּמֶּה Isaiah 14:14, to make oneself like.

Derivatives דָּם No. II, דְּמוּת, דִּמְיוֹן.

This signification of resemblance appears to be proper to this root; but it has another borrowed from the cognate stock דָּמָם, דּוּם namely

II.

דָּמָה

(1)  to be silent, to be quiet, to rest, to cease; Jeremiah 14:17, “my eyes are poured out in tears, day and night, and they do not cease;” Lamentations 3:49.

(2) causat. to make an end of any thing, hence to destroy (compare הֵדֵם, הִכְחִיד, הִשְׁבִּית, כִּלָּה No.4), especially to lay waste, to desolate, Hosea 4:5, דָּמִיתִי אִמֶּךָ “I destroy thy mother,” that is, lay waste thy country; Jeremiah 6:2, דָּמִיתִי בַת־צִיּוֹן “I lay waste the daughter of Zion,” i.e. thee.

Niphal, to be cut off, to perish, used of men; Hosea 10:15, בַּשַּׁהַר נִדְמֹה נִדְמָה מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל “to-morrow shall the king of Israel be cut off;” Isaiah 6:5, אוֹי־לי כִּי־נִדְמֵיתִי “alas for me! for I perish;” used of nations, Zephaniah 1:11; Hosea 4:6 of cities, countries, Isaiah 15:1; Jeremiah 47:5; Hosea 10:7. [See also Psalms 49:13, 21 Ps4 9:21.] (In all these examples the preterite occurs, in the future the forms used are יִדַּמּוּ, תִּדַּמּוּ from syn. דָּמַם). Hence דְּמִי, דֳּמִי.
