גַּף m. (from the root גָּפַף).
(1) back, i.q. גַּב; עַל גַּפֵּי upon the back, i.e. upon, i.q. Ch. עַל גַּבֵּי, Proverbs 9:3.
(2) body. Hence בְּגַפּוֹ with his body (only), i.e. without his wife and children, Exodus 21:3, Exodus 21:4LXX. μόνος.
גַּף Chald. a wing; plur. גַּפִּין Daniel 7:4,, Syriac ܓܦܶܐܳ; compare above Heb. אֲגַפִּים. The signification of back is applied in Hebrew to any surface whatever, and particularly to the side; from the signification of side comes that of wing. Secondary are the roots Med. Nun גָּנַב, Arab. جنف to turn to the side.
