Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בִּנְיָמִין (“son of the right hand,” i.e. of good fortune, as if Felix, see יָמִין No. 4 ), pr.n. of Benjamin, the patriarch, the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel. The ancestor of the tribe of the same name (בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִין Numbers 1:36 מַמֵּה ב׳ Joshua 21:4, 17 Joshua 21:17 and simply בִּנְיָמִין m. Judges 20:39, 40 Judges 20:40), whose territory (אֶרֶץ בִּנְיָמִין Jeremiah 1:1) is described as nearly in the middle of the land on this side Jordan, Joshua 18:21, seq. The warlike disposition of this tribe is signified, Genesis 49:27.-שַׁעַר בִּנְיָמִין is a gate of Jerusalem, on the north side of the walls, Jeremiah 37:13, 38:7 Zechariah 14:10 prob. the same which is called elsewhere “the gate of Ephraim,” comp. Thes. page 141, A, and Faber’s Archæologie, p. 533. LXX. Βενιαμίν. This word, whenever it denotes the patriarch, is written in one (see בִּן־יָמִין); but the Gentile noun is written separately בֶּן־יְמִינִי (comp. Lehrg. 515) 1 Samuel 9:21; Psalms 7:1, Benjamite, with the art. בֶּן־הַיְמִינִי (like בֵּית הַשִּׁמְשִׁי) Judges 3:15; 2 Samuel 16:11. Plur. בְּנֵי יְמִינִי Judges 19:16. Ellipt. אִישׁ יְמִינִי for אִישׁ בֶּן־יְמִינִי 1 Samuel 9:1; 2 Samuel 20:1, and אֶרֶץ יְמִינִי 1 Samuel 9:4 (like the Arab. بَكْرِىُّ Becrite, for Abubecrite, from ابو بكر).
