1012) la (אל AL) AC: Yoke CO: Ox AB: Strength: The pictograph a is a picture of an ox head and also represents its strength. The l is a picture of a shepherd staff and also represents the authority of the shepherd. Combined these two pictographs mean "the strong authority" and can be anyone or thing of strong authority. The yoke is understood as a "staff on the shoulders" (see Isaiah 9:4) in order to harness their power for pulling loads such as a wagon or plow. Hence, the two pictographs can also represent "the ox in the yoke". Often two oxen were yoked together. An older, more experienced ox would be teamed up (yoked) with a younger, less experienced ox. The older ox in the yoke is the "strong authority" who, through the yoke, teaches the younger ox. (eng: all; elk; elephant)

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָלָה I. prop. to be round; hence to be thick, fat; cogn. root אוּל (comp. especially אוּל abdomen, belly, Psalms 73:4). Arab. أَلِىَ to have fleshy buttocks, to have a fat tail (as a ram). Hence אַלְיָה.

II. denom. from אֵל (see the note on אֵל ).

(1) to swear; Arab. أَلاَ for أَلَوَ Conj. IV. V. prop. to affirm by God, 1 Kings 8:31 [Hiphil].

(2) to curse, Judges 17:2; Hosea 4:2.

(3) to cry out, to lament (Germ. Gotterbarmen, Gott um Erbarmen anrufen), Joel 1:8.

(I should not oppose the idea of this root being onomatopoetic, comp. יָלַל, אָלַל, and the signification which I have put in the third place would then be primary.)

Hiphil, to cause any one to swear, to bind him by an oath, construed with acc., 1 Kings 8:31; 2 Chronicles 6:22; 1 Samuel 14:24. Fut. apoc. וַיֹּאֶל from יֹאלֶה for יַאֲלֶה 1 Sa. l. cit. Derivatives אָלָה and תַּאֲלָה.

אָלָה f. (with Kametz impure, from אָלָה No. II., for אָאלָה and that for אַלְאָה, אַלְוָה; Arab. أَلْوَةُ, see Lehrg. 509.

(1) an oath. בּוֹא בְּאָלָה to enter into an oath, i.e. to bind oneself by oath, Nehemiah 10:30 hence הֵבִיא בְּאָלָה to bind any one by an oath, Ezekiel 17:13. Compare Virg Æn. iv. 339, hœe in fœdera veni. אָלָתִי “an oath imposed on me,” Genesis 24:41.

(2) a covenant confirmed by an oath, Genesis 26:28; Deuteronomy 29:11, 13 Deuteronomy 29:13; Ezekiel 16:59.

(3) imprecation, curse, Numbers 5:21; Isaiah 24:6, שְׁבֻעַת־אָלָה an oath joined with imprecations; Numbers 5:21. הָיָה לְאָלָה to become a curse, Jeremiah 44:12. נָהַן לְאָלָה to make to be an execration, Jeremiah 42:18. Plur. אָלוֹת curses, Numbers 5:23; Deuteronomy 29:11.
