לָעַג properly to stammer (Syriac ܠܥܶܓ, also ܠܓܰܥܝܶܓ, لَغْلَغَ, لَخْلَجَ Eth. ላዕላዕ and ላእላእ፡ stammerer, compare לָעַז), hence
(1) to speak barbarously, in a foreign language (compare לוּץ), comp. Niphal, and transp. עִלֵּג, عِلْجُ speaking barbarously.
(2) to mock at, to deride, prop. to imitate any one’s voice in stammering, by way of derision (Chald. לַגְלַג to mock. Compare transp. Greek γελάω, also χλεύη, χλευάζω, Goth. hlahjan, lahhan, Pers. لاغيدن to joke, Germ. lachen, to laugh). Proverbs 1:26 followed by a dat. of pers. Proverbs 17:5. Psalms 2:4, אֲדנָי יִלְעַג לָמוֹ “the Lord will mock at them,” shall despise them as enemies who can accomplish nothing; 59:9 Job 22:19
Niphal, to speak barbarously, in a foreign language, Isaiah 33:19.
Hiphil, i.q. Kal No. 2, to mock, to deride, Job 21:3 followed by לְ Psalms 22:8; Nehemiah 2:19 followed by בְּ 2 Chronicles 30:10. Hence
