The form ἄρσην, which WH read throughout, is illustrated by P Oxy IV. 744.9 (B.C. 1) (= Selections, p. 33) where with reference to the birth of a child it is directed ἐὰν ἦν (l. ᾖ) ἄρσενον ἄφες, ἐὰν ἦν (l. ᾖ) θήλεα ἔκβαλε : cf. also P Gen I. 35.6 (A.D. 161) κ [αμήλους ] [τε ]λείους ἄρσενας δύο λευκούς. In P Oxy I. 37i. 7 (A.D. 49) (= Selections, p. 49) we have ἀρρενικὸν σωμάτιον, but in ib. 38.7 (a document dealing with the same incident, A.D. 49–50) (= Selections, p. 53) it is ἀρσενικὸν σωμάτιον. For ἄρρην see further CPR 28.12 (A.D. 110) τῶν δὲ ἀρρένων υἱῶν, BGU I. 88.6 (A.D. 147) κάμηλ (ον) ἄρρενον [λ ]ευκόν, P Strass I. 30.13 (A.D. 276) ἀρρενικὰ ἑπτά, P Lond 46.105 (magic, iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 68) θῆλυ καὶ ἄρρεν. Ostr 1601 has παιδίου ἀρσενικοῦ : cf. P Oxy IX. 1216.14 (ii/iii A.D.) ἦ καὶ ἀρσενεικὸν ἡμῖν ἀφίκατα ̣[ι;], ";Have you produced us a male child?"; (Ed.), and the MGr ἀρσενικός. There is an important investigation into the rationale of the variation between ρσ and ρρ in the Κοινή in Wackernagel Hellenistica, p. 12 ff. : also see Thumb Hellen., p. 77 f. A further orthographic difference appears in P Petr III. 59 b (iii/ii B.C.) σώματα ἐρσενικά : see other instances, and a discussion on dialect points involved, in Mayser Gr. p. 5; and cf. Thumb’s Gr. Dial, (index s.v. ἔρσην).
