make a bold venture upon, τινί Th. 7.67: c. inf., ἀ. ἐπιχειρῆσαι Lys. 7.28; λέγειν Aeschin. 3.131, cf. Plb. 2.45.2, Ph. 1.233, etc.: — pf. part. Pass. in act. sense, δι' ἐλευθερίας λίαν ἀποτετολμημένης too presumptuous liberty, Pl. Lg. 701b, cf. Plu. Galb. 25: in pass. sense, εἰπεῖν τὰ νῦν ἀποτετ. Pl. R. 503b: abs., ἀποτολμᾷ καὶ λέγει Romans 10:20 : c.acc., ἀναίρεσιν J. AJ 7.8.3.
ἀποτολμάω, ἀποτόλμω; properly, to be bold of oneself (ἀπό (which see V.)), i. e. to assume boldness, make bold: Romans 10:20; cf. Winers De verb. comp. etc. Part iv., p. 15. (Occasionally in Thucydides, Plato, Aeschines, Polybius, Diodorus, Plutarch.)

Dittenberger prints the verb in Syll 803.94, but the context is so mutilated that the citation is at best only probable. The word has warrant from classical and Hellenistic literature.
