Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For the Pauline phrase ἀπελεύθερος Κυρίου in 1 Corinthians 7:22, Deissmann (LAE p. 332 f.) compares the common title ";freedman of the Emperor,"; Σεβαστοῦ ἀπελεύθερος or ἀπελεύθερος Καίσαρος : see e.g. Syll 371.7 (time of Nero), and the numerous examples in Magie De vocabulis solemnibus p. 70. The adjective is very common in the papyri, e.g. P Oxy I. 98.3 (A.D. 141–2) Ἀρχίᾳ ἀπελευθέρῳ Ἀμοιτᾶτος, ib. 104.4 (A.D. 96) Σο ()ρις Ἁρποχρᾶτος ἀπελευθέρου al. For the light thrown by the ancient rites of manumission on the Pauline teaching regarding spiritual freedom see Deissmann’s valuable discussion referred to above, and Archiv v. p. 117 f.
