II cause a stream to break or divide round a piece of land, [ Βούσιρις] τὸν Νεῖλον περὶ τὴν χώραν περιέρρηξε Isoc. 11.31: Pass., τοῦ Δέλτα κατὰ τὸ ὀξὺ περιρρήγνυται ὁ Νεῖλος Hdt. 2.16, cf. Ael. NA 7.24; βρονταὶ περιερρήγνυντο kept breaking round a place, Plu. Crass. 19 .

III break a thing round or on another, wreck, τὸ σκαφίδιον πρὸς πέτραν Luc. Merc.Cond. 2, cf. Poll. 1.114; ἀλλήλοισι π. ἀέλλας Q.S. 8.61 . ὄρος περιερρωγός broken all round, i.e. precipitous, Nic.Dam. 1 J.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

περιρρήγνυμι (L T Tr WH περιρήγνυμι, with one rho ; see the preceding word): 1 aorist participle plural περιρρήξαντες; (περί and ῤήγνυμι); to break off on all sides, break off all round (cf. περί, III. 1): τό ἱμάτιον, to rend or tear off all around, Acts 16:22. So of garments also in 2 Macc. 4:38 and often in secular authors; Aeschylus sept. 329; Demosthenes, p. 403, 3; Polybius 15, 33, 4; Diodorus 17, 35.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

πλουτίζω is included by Anz (Subsidia, p. 297) in the class of verbs which, going back to the beginnings of Greek letters, disappear for a time from general use, only to come to light again in later Greek. This particular word is fairly common in the LXX and occurs ter in the NT.
