Lightfoot (Phil..2 p. 174 f.) recalls that this proper name (Romans 16:14), an abbreviated form of Patrobius, was borne by a well-known freedman of Nero (Tac. Hist. i. 49, ii. 95), and cites two other exx. of it from the inscrr. : TI.CL.AUG. L. PATROBIUS (Grut. p. 610. 3), and TI.CLAUDIO. PATROBIO (Murat. p. 1329. 3). Pallis (ad Rom l.c.) prefers the accentuation Πατροβᾶς, and regards the suffix as a contemptuous addition to the name when applied to slaves. He cites Blaydes ad Aristoph. Eq. 534 : ";Forma Κοννᾶς pro κόννος cotemptum exprimit.";
