This Latin surname, as in Acts 13:1, is found in an ostracon tax-receipt of A.D. 174–5, published in Archiv vi. p. 213, where one of the πράκτορες ἀργυρικῶν is Αἰβύτιος Νίγερ. It stands alone in a sepulchral inscr. of Roman times, Preisigke 46 Νίγερ μαχαιροφόρος, εὐψύχι. On the possibility that Νίγερ (Ac l.c. ) was a nickname first given to Συμεών at Antioch (cf. Acts 11:26), see Kinsey in Exp T xxxv. p. 86 f.
