1. whip, flog, μάστιξεν δ' ἵππους Il.l.c., etc.; τυ.. ὑπὸ.. ὤμους μαστίσδοιεν (v. supr.) Theoc. l.c.: c. inf., μάστιξεν δ' ἐλάαν whipped them on or forward, Il. 5.366, Od. 6.82, etc.: metaph., ἵνα.. σε πολλοὶ μαστίξωσι λόγοις Epigr.Gr. 303.5 (Smyrna).
2. stimulate the bowels, Steph. in Hp. 2.311 D.: — Pass., ib.312 D. — word, used twice in Com., Eup. 72, Alex. 133.5, also in LXX Numbers 22:25, Wi. 5.11 (Pass.); and in late Prose, Plu. Alex. 42, Luc. Pr.Im. 24, etc.; the Att. form being μαστιγόω.

For this NT ἅπ. εἰρ. (Acts 22:25 : cf. Ev. Petr. 3) see P Lille I. 29i. 15 (fragment of a code—iii/B.C.) μηδὲ στίζειν, μηδ ̣[ὲ ] μ ̣α ̣[στ ]ί [ζε ]ι [ν, ";neither to brand nor to flog them";; but the reading is very doubtful, see Chrest, II. p. 412. The verb is used figuratively in Kaibel 303.5 μαστίξωσι λόγοις.
