μασί-σσημα, μασί-σσησις, μασι-σσητήρ, incorrectly written for μασάομαι, etc. μάσσεται, v. cross μαίομαι.
μᾰσάομαι, aor. 1 ἐμασησάμην Hp. Epid. 7.11, Hsch. s.v. ἐμάσταζεν: —
I chew, ἀμυγδάλας μασᾶσθαι Eup. 253; κρέας Ar. Pl. 321; σηπίας Id. Ec. 554; τι Hp. l.c.; πάπυρον Thphr. HP 4.8.4; τὰ δέρματα τῶν θυρεῶν J. BJ 6.3.3: abs., Ar. Eq. 717, V. 780, Thphr. Char. 20.5: μασώμενον, τό, of a toothache remedy, Cass. Fel. 32. — Not in Trag., or Att. Prose.

μασσάομαι (R G) more correctly μασάομαι (L T Tr WH): imperfect 3 person plural ἐμασῶντο; (ΜΑΩ μάσσω, to knead); to chew, consume, eat, devour (κρέας, Aristophanes, Plutarch, 321; τά δέρματα τῶν θυρεων, Josephus, b. j. 6, 3, 3; ῤίζας ξύλων, the Sept. Job 30:4, and other examples in other authors): ἐμασῶντο τάς γλώσσας αὐτῶν, they gnawed their tongues (for pain), Revelation 16:10.

The correct spelling of this verb with a single σ, as in Revelation 16:10 (cf. Job 30:4), is found in the magic P Lond 46.269 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 73) τοὺς ἰχθύας τοῖς στόμασι μασωμένους, ";fish gnawing with their mouths."; Cf. Artemid. iv. 33 μασήσασθαι ἄρτους. MGr μασσῶ, ";chew.";
