II act of going to bed, τῆς κοίτης ὥρη bed -time, Hdt. 1.10, 5.20; τραπέζῃ καὶ κοίτῃ δέκεσθαι to entertain 'at bed and board', ibid.; τὴν σκηνὴν εἰς κ. διέλυον for going to bed, X. Cyr. 2.3.1 (but κεῖσθαι κοίταν to lie still in death, A. Ag. 1494 (lyr.)).

κοίτη, κοίτης, ἡ (ΚΑΩ, ΚΑΙΩ, κεῖμαι akin to κοιμάω); from Homer, Odyssey 19, 341 down; the Sept. chiefly for מִשְׁכָּב, also for שְׁכָבָה etc.;
a. a place for lying down, resting, sleeping in; a bed, couch: εἰς τήν κοίτην (see εἰμί, V. 2 a.) εἰσιν, Luke 11:7.
b. specifically, the marriage-bed, as in the Tragg.: τήν κοίτην μιαίνειν, of adultery (Josephus, Antiquities 2, 4, 5; Plutarch, de fluv. 8, 3), Hebrews 13:4.
c. cohabitation, whether lawful or unlawful (Leviticus 15:4f, 21-25, etc.; Wis. 3:13, 16; Euripides, Med. 152; Alc. 249): plural sexual intercourse (see περιπατέω, b. α.), Romans 13:13 (A. V. chambering); by metonymy, of the cause for the effect we have the peculiar expression κοίτην ἔχειν ἐκ τίνος, to have conceived by a man, Romans 9:10; κοίτη σπέρματος, Leviticus 15:16; Leviticus 22:4; Leviticus 18:20, 23 (here κοίτη εἰς σπερματισμόν); on these phrases cf. Fritzsche, Commentary on Romans 2, p. 291f.

κοίτη in the sense of ";bed"; occurs in the Serapeum dream P Par 51.11 (B.C. 160) (= Selections, p. 19) μεταβέβλ [ηκα ] τὴν κοίτην μου, ";I have changed my bed"; : cf. also the Christian letter written by a sick woman, P Oxy VIII. 1161.10 (iv/A.D.)—πάνυ μὴ δυναμένη ἀναστῆναι ἐκ τῆς κοίτης μου, ";quite unable to rise from my bed."; The word seems to have the general meaning of ";resting-place"; in P Lips I. 118.15 (A.D. 160–1), where ground is set aside εἰς βρῶσιν προβάτων καὶ κοίτην. In this way κοίτη is frequently used of a ";parcel"; of land (cf. σφραγίς) as in P Ryl II. 168.9 (A.D. 120) κοίτην ἣν ἐγεώργει Φιβίων, ";a parcel cultivated by Phibion,"; P Amh II. 88.9 (A.D. 128) ἐν δυσὶ κοίταις ἀρούρας ἑπτά, ";seven arourae in two parcels,"; etc. The derived meaning ";box,"; ";chest,"; is seen in P Petr II. 4 (6).10 (B.C. 255–4) διὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἄρτους ἐν τῇ κοίτῃ, P Tebt I. 180 (B.C. 92 or 59) εἰσὶν οἱ δεδωκ (ότες) χαλκὸν εἰς τὴν κοίτην Εὑρήμονος. For the verb κοιτάζω, which is found in the LXX, cf. P Oxy XII. 1465.9 (i/B.C.) τοὺς ἄλλους τοὺς ἐκε ̣ῖ κο ̣ιταζο [μέ ]νους, ";the others who sleep there"; (Edd.), for the subst. κοιτασμός cf. P Tebt II. 423.19 (early iii/A.D.) ἐὰν οὖν μὴ ἦς λαβὼν τὰ πρόβατα πρὸς κοιτασμός (l. –όν), ";so if you have not received the sheep for folding"; (Edd.), for ἀπόκοιτος cf. ib. 384.6 (A.D. 10) οὐ γεινόμενος (l. –ον) ἀπόκοιτον οὐδ᾽ ἀφ [ήμερον ἀπ ]ὸ τῆς [Πασώνιος ] οἰκίας, ";he shall not sleep away or absent himself by day from Pasonis’ house"; (Edd.), and for ἐκκοιτεία see P Tebt II. 332.9 (s.v. καιρός). With the use κοίτη for ";sexual intercourse"; in Romans 13:13 we may compare the verb ἀνδροκοιτέω in BGU IV. 1106.29 (B.C. 13), P Cairo Preis 31.24 (A.D. 139–140).
