Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The only NT sense of this word = ";visit"; (Galatians 1:18) is paralleled in the interesting scrap of a traveller’s letter P Lond 854.5 (i/ii A.D.) (= III. p. 206, Selections, p. 70) ἵνα τὰς χε [ι ]ρ ̣ο ̣π ̣[οι ] [τους τέ ]χνας ἱστορήσωσι : cf. .10 εὔτομα (l. εὔστομα) ἱστόρ [η ]σα ̣. It is used often thus (= inspicio) in the inscrr. e.g. OG1S 694 (Rom.) Ἑρμογένης Ἀμασ [εὺ ]ς [τὰς ] μὲν ἄλλας σύρινγας ἰδὼν ἐθαύμασα, τὴν δὲ τοῦ Μέμνονος ταύτην εἱστορήσας ὑπερεθαύμασα, and in the wall-scratchings of visitors to the royal tombs at Thebes, e.g. Preisigke 1004 (Rom.) Ἰούλιος Δημήτριος χειλίαρχος ἱστορήσας ἐθαύμασα : cf. also the Theban inscr., Kaibel 1020—

Τατιανὸς ἡγεμὼν Θηβάιδος ἱστορήσα [ς ] ἐθαύμασεν

τὸ θαῦ [μα ξ ]υνὸν τῶν σοφῶν Αἰγυπ [τί ]ων.

For the verb = ";relate,"; see BGU IV. 1208.5 (B.C. 27–6) πιττάκ ]ιον, δι᾽ οὗ [μοι ] ἱστορεῖς τὴν [Καλατύ ]τεως πλ ̣[άν ]ην, P Oxy VII. 1027.11 (i/A.D.) ὑπόμνημα. . . δι᾽ οὗ ματαίως εἱστορεῖ περί τε τοῦ ἀγνοεῖν α [ ]τὸν τὴν τῶν ἐμοὶ γενη [μένων ] (l. γεγενη [μένων ]) ἀσφαλιῶν θέσιν, ";a memorandum wherein he vainly relates that he was ignorant of the securities which had been given to me"; (Ed.) : cf. the use of the compound συνιστορέω in BGU IV. 1141.49 (B.C. 14), PSI I. 64.21 (i/B.C. ?) al The subst. ἱστορία, which survives in MGr = ";narrative,"; ";history,"; may be illustrated from OGIS 13.12 ( c. B.C. 300–290), where the Prienians are represented as establishing their possession of a certain district—ἔκ τε τῶν ἱστοριῶν κ [αὶ ἐκ τῶν ἄλ ]λων μαρτυριῶν. For its use in Byzantine literature = ";painting,"; owing to the development of picture histories, see Birt Buchrolle, p. 307 f.
