For this word which in the NT is peculiar to Luke (cf. Hobart, p. 267), see Syll 601.24 (iii/B.C.) ποιείσθω δὲ ἡ ἱέρεια καθ ἑκάστην νουμηνίαν ἐπικουρίαν ὑπὲρ πόλεως. The adj. with reference to auxiliary or mercenary troops is found in OGIS 338.17 (B.C. 133) δεδόσθαι πολιτείαν. . παραφυλακίταις καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις ἐ [πικού ]ροις τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν ἢ ἐνεκτημένοις ἐν τ [ῆι πόλει ] ἢ τῆι χώραι. An Imperial rescript of late iii/A.D. shows the verb—P Oxy XII. 1407.6 ἡμ ̣ε ̣ῖς σοι ἐπικουροῦ [μεν. Cf. ib. XIV. 1630.5 (s.v. τόπος).
