Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The only exx. we have found of this word are in the hostile sense of ";setting upon,"; ";attack,"; ";machination,"; e.g. P Rein 17.9 (B.C. 109) ἐπε ]ὶ οὖν ὑπο [λα ]μβάνω [δ ]ι ̣ὰ τῆς ἐπιθέσεως γ ̣ε ̣γονέναι Κ ̣ωννῶτος, ";comme j’ai lieu d’attribuer ce coup à une machination de Konnôs"; (Ed.), P Oxy II. 283.15 (A.D. 45) ὃν καὶ ἀγείοχα (l. ἀγήοχα) ἐπὶ σὲ μεθ᾽ ἱκανῆς τῆς γεγονοιίας μοι ἐπιθέσεως καὶ πληγῶν ἐπιφορᾶς, ";I have brought him to you at the expense of a severe and violent attack upon myself"; (Edd.), ib. VIII. 1121.7 (A.D. 295) καὶ αὐτὴ γὰρ ἀνυπέρβλητον ἐ ̣π ̣ι ̣θ ̣ε ̣σ ̣ιν καὶ ἁρπαγὴν πάσχουσα πρόσειμι μαρτυρο [μέν ]η τὰ εἴς με ἐπιχειρηθέντα, ";I therefore, being the victim of a most outrageous attack and robbery, approach you to testify to the assault upon me"; (Ed.). Cf. Vett. Val. p. 73.11 ἐξ ὀνειδισμῶν καὶ ἐνέδρας καὶ δόλου καὶ ἐπιθέσεως ἀναγομένους κτλ., and for ἐπιθέτης ib. p. 16.11. Ἐπίθεμα = ";addition"; is found in P Oxy III. 500.14 (A.D. 130), and according to the editors’ note ad l. it should be rendered ";higher bid"; in P Amh II. 85.21 (A.D. 78) : see further for the word the note on P Giss I. 48.10 and for the phrase ἱλαστήριον ἐπίθεμα in Exodus 25:16 (17) see Deissmann, BS, p. 124 ff.
