1. fut. ἐπακούσομαι ib. Genesis 30:33, later ἐπακούσω Psalm.Solom. 18.3: — hear, c. acc. rei, ὂς πάντ' ἐφορᾷς καὶ πάντ' ἐπακούεις, of the Sun, Il. 3.277, cf. Od. 11.109; prov., ὁπποῖόν κ' εἴπῃσθα ἔπος, τοῖόν κ' ἐπακούσαις as thou speakest, so wilt thou be answered, Il. 20.250; φωνὴν ἐ. Hes. Op. 448; χρησμόν Ar. ἐπακούω: 1 aorist ἐπήκουσά; from Homer down; the Sept. often for עָנָה and שָׁמַע ;

2. to listen to i. e. hear with favor, grant one's prayer (Aeschylus choëph. 725; τῶν εὐχῶν, Lucian, Tim. 34): τίνος, to hearken to one, 2 Corinthians 6:2 from Isaiah 49:8; often so in the Sept.

With ἐπακούω in 2 Corinthians 6:2 (fr. LXX Isaiah 49:8) cf. the invocation to Isis by a dreamer in the Serapeum P Par 51.24 (B.C. 160) (= Selections, p. 20) ἐλθέ μοι, θεὰ θεῶν, εἵλεως γινομένη, ἐπάκουσόν μου, ἐλέησον τὰς διδύμας. So also P Leid Wv. 41 (ii/iii A.D.) κύριε. . . εἴσελθε καὶ ἐπάκουσόν με (note the late acc. of person as after the MGr ἀκούω), ib.x. 36 ἄτερ γὰρ τούτων ὁ θεὸς οὐκ ἐπακούσεται, BGU IV. 1080.6 (iii/A.D. ?) κατὰ τὰς κοινὰς ἡμῶν εὐχὰς καὶ προσευχάς, ἐφ᾽ αἷς οἱ θεοὶ τέλιον (l. —ειον) ἐπακούσαντες παρέσχον, and the Christian P Oxy XII. 1494.7 (early iv/A.D.) εἵν᾽ οὕτ ̣ω ̣ς ̣ ἐπακούσῃ ὁ θαιὸς τῶν εὐχῶν ὑμῶν. In a ii/B.C. Delphic inscr. a certain Bacchius is described as having bestowed benefactions on the city—ἐπακούσας προθ [ύ ]μως τὰ ἀξιούμενα (Syll 306.11). The adj. is found in a iii/A.D. love-spell, Preisigke 4947.6 ἵνα με φιλῇ καὶ ὃ ἐὰν αὐτὴν αἰτῶ, ἐπήκοός μοι ᾖν (l. ᾖ).
