ἐξᾰπᾰτάω,
iter. ἐξαπάτασκον Ar. Pax 1070 (hexam.): — Pass., fut. -απατηθήσομαι Pl. Grg. 499c; but -απατήσομαι in pass. sense, X. An. 7.3.3: — deceive or beguile, deceive thoroughly, εἴτινά που.. ἔτι ἔλπεται ἐξαπατήσειν Il. 9.371, cf. Od. 9.414, Pi. O. 1.29, Hdt. 1.153, Ar. V. 901, etc.; ἐ. τινὰ φρένας Id. Pax 1099 (hexam.); ἐ. καὶ φενακίζειν D. 21.204; seduce a woman, Hdt. 2.114: c. dupl. acc., ἐ. τινά τι in a thing, X. ἐξαπατάω, ἐξαπάτω; 1 aorist ἐξηπάτησα; 1 aorist passive participle feminine ἐξαπατηθεῖσα; (εξ( strengthens the simple verb (cf. ἐκ, VI. 6)), to deceive: Romans 7:11; Romans 16:18; 1 Corinthians 3:18; 2 Corinthians 11:3; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; passive 1 Timothy 2:14 (L T Tr WH). Syll 510.37 (ii/B.C.) ἐξαπατήσαντες τοὺς ὑστέρους δανειστάς, ib. 533.47 (beginning of iii/A.D.) εἰ δέ τις ἐξαπατήσα [ς τῶν ] ὀφειλόν [των ξένῳ ὑποθείη τι τῶν χωρίων τῶ ]ν δημοσίων καὶ τοῦτο ἐλενχθείη, ";and if any of the debtors should fraudulently mortgage"; etc. For the pass., as in 1 Timothy 2:14, cf. P Oxy III. 471.42 (ii/A.D.) ἐξαπατηθ [ῆναι ] ἢ καὶ δωρεὰ [ς λαβεῖν ] φήσεις : ";will you say that you were deceived or that you took bribes?"; (Edd.).
