Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἐγγράφω is used as practically equivalent to the simple γράφω in P Lond 358.15 (c. For the meaning ";record"; see P Cairo Preis 1.16 (ii/A.D.) ἐὰν γὰρ μηδὲν ἐπερ ̣ώτημα ᾖ ἐνγεγρα [μμένον. . . . and for ";inscribe"; see PSI I. 28.40 (iii/iv A.D.?) συντέλεσον τὰ [ἐγγ ]εγραμμένα τῷ πεδάλῳ τούτου (l. πετάλῳ τούτῳ). The verbal ἔγγραπτος is common, e.g. P Rein 18.31 (B.C. 108) δοῦναι δέ μοι τὰς πίστε ̣ις δι᾽ ἐγγράπτων, ";des sûretés écrites"; (Ed.), P Tebt II. 434 (A.D. 104) ἔχοντες ἔνγραπτον [ἐπι ]στολήν, and, in contrast with ἄγραφος, P Oxy II. 268.16 (A.D. 58) περὶ ἄλλου μηδενὸς ἁπλῶς ἐνγράπτου ἢ ἀγράφου πράγματος, and similarly P Ryl II. 174.20, .32 (A.D. 112) al. A good example of ἔγγραφος is afforded by P Oxy I. 70.4 (iii/A.D.) πᾶσα κυ ̣[ρί ]α ἔνγραφος συναλλαγὴ πίστιν καὶ ἀλήθ [ειαν ἔ ]χει, ";every valid written contract is credited and accepted"; (Edd.). On the ἔγγραφος as distinguished from the ἄγραφος γάμος see Chrest. II. i. p. 209 ff. Ἐγγράφως = ";in writing,"; P Oxy I. 53.8 (A.D. 316), ib. III. 475.8 (A.D. 182), ib. VI. 902.10, .17 (c. A.D. 465) al.

Ἐγγράμματος occurs in a woman’s petition to a prefect : she claims the right to act without a guardian, in view of the fact, amongst other conditions, that she is ἐνγράμματος δὲ κ ̣α [ὶ ἐ ]ς ̣ τὰ μάλιστα γράφειν εὐκ ̣ο ̣π ̣ως δυναμένη, ";literate and able to write with the greatest ease"; (P Oxy XII. 1467.13 ff.—A.D. 263).
