διαμᾰχ-ομαι, fut. -μαχέσομαι (v.l. for -μαχεσώμεθα aor. subj.) Hdt. 9.48: —
1. fight, contend, σιδήρῳ E. Supp. 678; εἷς πρὸς ἕνα Pl. Lg. 833e; opp. λανθάνειν, Id. R. 345a; πρός τι v.l. in D. 17.18; περὶ τῆς χώρης τοῖς ἐπιοῦσιν Hdt. 4.11; περὶ τοῦ πρότερος εἰπεῖν Ar. Eq. 339, cf. Pl. Men. 86c; περὶ τούτου ὡς οὐκ.. Lys. 4.1; ὑπέρ τινος Pl. Smp. 207b; δ. μὴ μεταγνῶναι ὑμᾶς I resist to the uttermost your change of opinion, Th. 3.40; δ. τὸ μὴ θανεῖν E. Alc. 694.
2. exert oneself, strive earnestly, περὶ τούτου ὅπως.. Pl. Prt. 325d; ὅπως μή.. Id. Grg. 502b.
3. in argument, contend or maintain that.., c. acc. et inf., Id. Tht. 158d: with a neg., δ. τι μὴ εἶναι Th. 3.42; δ. ὅτι οὐκ ἀπόλλυται Pl. Phd. 106c; ὡς οὐ.. Id. Prm. 127e, etc.; also δ. τι carry a point, Id. Sph. 261a.
διαμάχομαι: imperfect διεμαχομην; to fight it out; contend fiercely: of disputants, Acts 23:9. (Sir. 8:1, 3; very frequent in Attic writings.)
