βόσκω; as in Greek writings from Homer down, to feed: Mark 5:14; Luke 15:15; ἀρνία, πρόβατα, John 21:15, 17 (in a figurative discourse portraying the duty of a Christian teacher to promote in every way the spiritual welfare of the members of the church); βόσκων a herdsman: Matthew 8:33; Luke 8:34. In the passive and middle (present participle βοσκόμενος, cf. Winers Grammar, § 38, 2 note) of flocks or herds, to feed, graze: Matthew 8:30; Mark 5:11; Luke 8:32. (In the Sept. for רָעָה.) [SYNONYMS: βόσκειν, ποιμαίνειν: ποιμαίνειν is the wider, βόσκειν the narrower term; the former includes oversight, the latter denotes nourishment; ποιμαίνειν may be rendered tend, βόσκειν specifically feed. SYN.: ποιμαίνειν G4165, to tend, shepherd, a wider term, including oversight as well as feeding (v. Tr., Syn., § xxv).

The verb is used in connexion with πρόβατα in P Magd 6.13 (B.C. 221) τά τε πρόβα ]τα βεβοσκηκότας , P Tebt II. 298.53 (A.D. 107–8) προβ ]άτων βοσκ [ο (μένων ), P Thead 57.2 (A.D. 317) βόσκοντος αὐτοῦ τὰ π [ρό ]βατα , and with a herd of swine, as in Mark 5:11, in the illiterate BGU III. 757.10 (A.D. 12) ἃ βόσκουσιν ὑικὰ κτήνηι . Cf. Syll 531.36 (iii/A.D.) πρόβατα [δὲ μὴ ἐξ ]έστω ἐ [πιβό ]σκε [ι ]ν ε [ἰς ] τὸ τέμενος μηδενί , on pain of confiscation to the god—see the editor’s note. A derived noun occurs in P Lond 219 recto (an account for food—ii/B.C.) (= II. p. 2) ἰδ ̣ίῳ βοσκῷ . It is frequently found as a termination, e.g. ἱερακοβοσκός (P Petr III. 99.5, ἰβιοβοσκός (ib. 58(e)ii, 23) (both iii/B.C.) : see Mayser Gr. p. 471.
