Benedictine monastery, Northamptonshire, England; known at first as Medeshamstede; founded 654 by Peada, king of Mercia. Destroyed by the Danes; restored; burned, 1116; Henry VIII made it the cathedral of his new Diocese of Peterborough (1541).
