An award, given annually by the Augustinian College of Saint Thomas of Villanova, Villanova, Pennsylvania, to honor the memory of Gregor Mendel, the Augustinian friar and Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Thomas the Apostle, in Brünn, Moravia, the discoverer and first exponent of the principles of heredity known now as the Mendelian Law. The presentation of the medal is made by the college each year, May 4,. The recipient of the medal is to be a Catholic scientist or one who has earned recognition in advancing the knowledge and the work of science. This medal was first given on May 4, 1929 to Dr John Kolmer, specialist in blood and bacteriology and director of laboratories in the School of Medicine in the University of Pennsylvania.
