Catholic physician and physicist. Born Bologna, Italy, 1737; died there, 1798. He became professor of anatomy at Bologna, c.1762,and held that post till a few months before his death, when he resigned rather than take the civiloath demanded by the Cisalpine Republic. He is famous for his experiments concerning the electrical forces in muscular movements. His name has been given to manifestations of current electricity (galvanism).
