Brother of Hubert van Eyck, born Maaseyck, c.1385;died Bruges, 1441. Besides collaborating with his brother in the Saint Bavon altar-piece, he achieved fame as a portrait painter. Two of his best-known works are the "Man with the Pinks" (Berlin Museum) and "Arnolfini and his Wife" (National Gallery). He entered the service of Philip of Burgundy in 1425, as an artist and a trusted envoy on delicate diplomatic missions, living at Lille until 1431 when he settled in Bruges. The museum of that city has his "Van der Paele Madonna." A "Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata" is in the Johnson collection in Philadelphia.
