Eymard, Peter Julian, Saint
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Religious founder, born La Mure d'Isere, France, 1811; died there, 1868. In 1829 he entered the Marist novitiate, but, obliged to leave because of illhealth, he entered the diocesan seminary and was ordained, 1834. In 1839 he returned to the Marist congregation, of which he became provincial in 1845. His entire spiritual life was centered upon the Blessed Sacrament and in 1857, with a single companion, he inaugurated the Society of the Blessed Sacrament in fulfilment of a vow to Our Lady of Fourvieres. The following year he founded a congregation of cloistered women for perpetual adoration, known as Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. The Priests' Eucharistic League and Archconfraternity are also due to his initiative. His works in four volumes all deal with the Holy Eucharist. Beatified in 1925; canonized in 1962.
