Confessor, Bishop of Auxerre, born Auxerre, France, c.380;died Ravenna, Italy, 448. After marrying and practising law with success in Rome, Germain returned to Gaul as a provincial governor, where, against his will, he was given the tonsure by Saint Amator, Bishop of Auxerre. He soon accepted Amator's act as providential, and embracing the clerical state succeeded Amator in 418. About 431 he was sent on a mission to Britain to oppose Pelagianism, and seven years later died in Italy while appealing personally to the emperor for clemency towards the rebellious Armoricans. His relics which were at Auxerre, were dispersed by the Huguenots, 1567. A finger was brought to Selby Abbey, England, 1150. Patron of Auxerre, France. Feast, July 31,.
