Former diocese, Yonne, France, founded by Peregrinus, 258; united to the Archdiocese of Sens, 1821. Of its 105 bishops, 27 were saints, including Saint Germain. The Council of Auxerre, 585 or 578, formulated 45 canons, important as illustrating life among newly-converted Christians. Many decrees were directed against pagan customs.
