Wonders
Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible
or WONDERS . (Heb. môphçth , Gr. teras; usually in OT and always in NT associated with Heb. ’ôth , Gr. sçmeion , Eng. ‘sign’ ). In OT the term ordinarily occurs with reference to the miracles at the time of the deliverance from Egypt ( Exodus 7:3 etc.) Jehovah’s ‘wonders in the land of Ham’ ( Psalms 105:27 ). In NT it is used of the miracles wrought by Jesus ( Acts 2:22 etc.), those demanded of Him by the people ( John 4:48 ); those of the Apostles and the early Church ( Acts 2:43 etc.); those which should be wrought by false Christs ( Matthew 24:24 = Mark 13:22 ). It refers primarily to the astonishment produced by a miraculous event, and so it is significant that, as applied to the miracles of Jesus, it is always conjoined with some other term. His miracles were not mere prodigies exciting astonishment, but ‘signs and wonders,’ that appealed at the same time, through their evidential value, to the reason and spirit. And yet Jesus preferred the intuitive faith that is independent alike of wonders and of signs ( John 4:48 ). See, further, Miracles, Sign.
