The founder and king (626-605 B.C.) of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Nabopolassar was a general in the Assyrian army. He rebelled in 627 B.C. and established his capital in Babylon. His reign was one of continual warfare as he slowly captured the cities of the Assyrian realm. He made an alliance with the Median King Cyaxares in 614, and the two sacked Nineveh in 612 B.C.
