(na boh ni' duhss) The last Babylonian king (556-539 B.C.). He was supported in his rise to the throne by those opposed to the powerful priests of Marduk, the national god. Nabonidus was a follower of the god Sin (seen) and sought to elevate this lesser god to the head of the pantheon. He rebuilt temples to Sin at Harran and Ur and installed his daughter as priestess at the latter. Nabonidus spent most of his reign absent from the capital. His son Belshazzar was left to rule the city while the king traveled the Middle East. See Babylon, History and Religion of .
