The Greek term soudarion is borrowed from a Latin term used for a table napkin or a handkerchief. The term derives from the Latin root for sweat, suggesting that a soudarion was a cloth for wiping sweat or a sweatband. Such a cloth is likely intended at Acts 19:12 . The same Greek term is used for a cloth in which money was buried (Luke 19:20 ) and for the cloth used to cover the face of the dead (John 11:44; John 20:7 ).
