Verse 1

enemies. Hebrew text has singular, but some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Targum of Onkelos, Syriac, and Vulgate, read the plural, as Authorized Version.

the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 .

God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 .

Verse 3

faint. This and the following three words = Figure of speech Synonymia. App-6 . tremble = be excited. (Hebrew = make haste.)

Verse 4

to fight for you. Compare Exodus 14:25 .Psalms 3:8 ; Psalms 35:1 .

Verse 5

man. Heb 'ish . App-14 .

Verse 6

what. Figure of speech Erotesis.

Verse 8

faint = melt.

Verse 10

proclaim peace: i.e. if it belong not to the Canaanites. Compare Matthew 10:12 , Matthew 10:13 .

Verse 14

spoil. take = take as a prey. These two words, "spoil" and "prey", occur in the name Maher-shalal-hash-baz. Isaiah 8:1 .

Verse 16

breatheth. Hebrew. neshamah = that hath breath. See App-16 .

Verse 17

utterly destroy. Because descendants of the Nephilim. App-25 . Compare Ch. Deuteronomy 7:1 , Deuteronomy 7:2 .

namely. Only six mentioned here.

as = according as.

Verse 18

That = to the intent that.

sin. Idolatry was, and still is, the great sin. Compare Galatians 1:5 , Galatians 1:20 .

Verse 19

man's. Hebrew. 'adam. App-14 .
