Verse 1

sons. Put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Part), for grandsons and greatgrandsons.

unto. Some codices, with Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, read "and unto".

rulers = elders.

of Jezreel. Doubtless they had fled to Samaria, being in great fear (2 Kings 10:4 ) from what Jehu had done in Jezreel.

Verse 6

mine = for me.

the men. Hebrew. 'enosh. App-14 .

persons. Hebrew. 'ish.

men. Hebrew. 'ish . App-14 .

Verse 7

baskets = the baskets. Hebrew. dud, for carrying fruit. Still used for this purpose. Not sal (bread-basket), which Gideon (Judges 6:19 ), and Pharaoh's baker (Genesis 40:17 ) used.

Verse 9

Ye be righteous. Said by way of flattery and to allay disaffection.

Verse 10

the word of the 10RD = the word of Jehovah. Compare 1 Kings 21:19-29 .

the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 .

by = by the hand of.

Verse 11

kinsfolks = acquaintance.

Verse 13

brethren. Put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of the Part) for near relatives. Compare 2 Chronicles 22:8 , where we have "sons of the brethren".

children = sons.

the king = Joram.

the queen = Jezebel, the queen-mother.

Verse 15

Jehonadab. He was a Kenite (1 Chronicles 2:55 ), descendants of the father-in-law of Moses (Numbers 10:29 . Judges 1:16 ; Judges 4:11 . 1 Samuel 15:6 ). See Jeremiah 35:0 .

as = according as.

Verse 16

see = be eyewitnesses of.

zeal for the LORD. Not pure. See verses: 2 Kings 10:29-31 .

Verse 19

worshippers = servants.

Verse 20

Proclaim = Sanctify, Hallow, or Solemnise.

Verse 21

full, &c. = so full [that they stood] mouth to mouth. Ellipsis to be thus supplied, as in Authorized Version margin.

Verse 24

offer = prepare. See App-43 .

life = soul. Hebrew. nephesh.

Verse 25

the city = Hebrew. 'lr, the innermost or most inaccessible part, whether of a city (= the citadel) or a house (as here).

Verse 26

images, or statues.

them = each of them.

Verse 27

draught house = dunghill, middens, latrince.

Verse 29

made Israel to sin. See note on 1 Kings 14:16 .

to wit = namely.

in Dan. See 1 Kings 12:29 , 1 Kings 12:30 , and compare Genesis 49:17 .

Verse 30

fourth generation. See 2 Kings 15:12 . These were Jehoahaz, Joash, Jeroboam II, and Zachariah. Jehu's dynasty was the longest in all Israel.

Verse 31

the sins. Hebrew. chata'. App-44 . Some codices read "all the sins".

Verse 32

to cut Israel short: or, to cut off the outskirts, or make inroads into.

coasts = borders.

Verse 33

eastward = toward the sun-rising.

Verse 34

the rest. An Assyrian inscription (now in the British Museum) records that Jehu paid tribute to Shalmaneser II, who in 842 B.C. defeated Hazael, king of Syria. Jehu bought Shalmaneser II off by giving him, as tribute, bars of silver and gold; a golden ladle and golden goblets and pitchers were among his gifts.

Verse 35
