Omgjorda nu såsom ej man dina länder; jag vill fråga dig, och du må giva mig besked. Var var du, när jag lade jordens grund? Säg det, om du har ett så stort förstånd. Vem har fastställt hennes mått -- du vet ju det? Och vem spände sitt mätsnöre ut över henne? Var fingo hennes pelare sina fästen, och vem var det som lade hennes hörnsten, medan morgonstjärnorna tillsammans jublade och alla Guds söner höjde glädjerop? Och vem satte dörrar för havet, när det föddes och kom ut ur moderlivet, när jag gav det moln till beklädnad och lät töcken bliva dess linda, när jag åt det utstakade min gräns och satte bom och dörrar därför, och sade: »Härintill skall du komma, men ej vidare, här skola dina stolta böljor lägga sig»? Har du i din tid bjudit dagen att gry eller anvisat åt morgonrodnaden dess plats, där den skulle fatta jorden i dess flikar, så att de ogudaktiga skakades bort därifrån? Då ändrar den form såsom leran under signetet, och tingen stå fram såsom klädda i skrud; då berövas de ogudaktiga sitt ljus, och den arm som lyftes för högt brytes sönder. Har du stigit ned till havets källor och vandrat omkring på djupets botten? Hava dödens portar avslöjat sig för dig, ja, såg du dödsskuggans portar? Har du överskådat jordens vidder? Om du känner allt detta, så låt höra. Vet du vägen dit varest ljuset bor, eller platsen där mörkret har sin boning, så att du kan hämta dem ut till deras gräns och finna stigarna som leda till deras hus? Visst kan du det, ty så tidigt blev du ju född, så stort är ju dina dagars antal! Har du varit framme vid snöns förrådshus? Och haglets förrådshus, du såg väl dem -- de förråd som jag har sparat till hemsökelsens tid, till stridens och drabbningens dag? Vet du vägen dit varest ljuset delar sig, dit där stormen sprider sig ut över jorden? Vem har åt regnflödet öppnat en ränna och banat en väg för tordönets stråle, till att sända regn över länder där ingen bor, över öknar, där ingen människa finnes, till att mätta ödsliga ödemarker och giva växt åt gräsets brodd? Säg om regnet har någon fader, och vem han är, som födde daggens droppar? Ur vilken moders liv är det isen gick fram, och vem är hon som födde himmelens rimfrost? Se, vattnet tätnar och bliver likt sten, så ytan sluter sig samman över djupet. Knyter du tillhopa Sjustjärnornas knippe? Och förmår du att lossa Orions band? Är det du som, när tid är, för himmelstecknen fram, och som leder Björninnan med hennes ungar? Ja, förstår du himmelens lagar, och ordnar du dess välde över jorden? Kan du upphöja din röst till molnen och förmå vattenflöden att övertäcka dig? Kan du sända ljungeldar åstad, så att de gå, så att de svara dig: »Ja vi äro redo»? Vem har lagt vishet i de mörka molnen, och vem gav förstånd åt järtecknen i luften? Vem håller med sin vishet räkning på skyarna? Och himmelens läglar, vem häller ut dem, medan mullen smälter såsom malm och jordkokorna klibbas tillhopa?

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion?.... From meteors the Lord passes to animals, beasts, and birds, wherefore some here begin the thirty ninth chapter, which only treats of such; and he begins with the lion, the strongest among beasts, and most fierce; cruel, and voracious; and asks, who hunts his prey for him? Not man, who cannot; and if he could, durst not: but the Lord does; and, according to some writers x, he has provided a small creature, between a fox and a wolf, called a jackal; which goes before the lion, and hunts the prey for him. And could this be understood particularly of the old lion, as Cocceius and others, naturalists y observe, that young lions hunt for the old ones, when they are not able to go in search of prey; and when they have got it, either bring it to them, or call them to partake of it with them;

or fill the appetite of the young lions, whose appetite is sharp and keen, and requires a great deal to fill it, and especially to satisfy a great many of them; herds of them, as Mr. Broughton renders the word, and which signifies a company; see Psalms 68:30. Men cannot feed them, but God can and does; there being some ends in Providence to be answered thereby, see Psalms 104:21; see also Psalms 34:8.

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? - The appeal here is to the instincts with which God has endowed animals, and to the fact that he had so made them that they would secure their own food. He asks Job whether he would undertake to do what the lion did by instinct in finding his food, and by his power and skill in seizing his prey. There was a wise adaptation of the lion for this purpose which man could neither originate nor explain.

Or fill the appetite of the young lions - Margin, as in Hebrew “life.” The word life is used here for hunger, as the appetite is necessarily connected with the preservation of life. The meaning here is, “Wouldst thou undertake to supply his needs? It is done by laws, and in a manner which thou canst not explain. There are in the arrangement by which it is accomplished marks of wisdom which far surpass the skill of man to originate, and the instinct and power by which it is done are proof of the supremacy of the Most High.” No one can study the subject of the instincts of animals, or become in the least acquainted with Natural History, without finding every where traces of the wisdom and goodness of God.

Verse Job 38:39. Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? — Rather the lioness, or strong lion. Hast thou his instinct? Dost thou know the habits and haunts of such animals as he seeks for his food? Thou hast neither his strength, his instinct nor his cunning.

In the best Hebrew Bibles, the thirty-ninth chapter begins with this verse, and begins properly, as a new subject now commences, relating to the natural history of the earth, or the animal kingdom; as the preceding chapter does to astronomy and meteorology.
