Contextual Overview

1 In thee O God I haue put my trust, let me neuer be put to confusion: 2 ridde me and deliuer me in thy ryghteousnesse, incline thine eare vnto me, and saue me. 3 Be thou my strong holde whervnto I may alway resort: thou hast geuen a charge to saue me, for thou art my house of defence, and my castell. 4 Delyuer me O my Lorde out of the hande of the vngodly: out of the hande of the vnryghteous and cruell man. 5 For thou O Lorde God art the thyng that I long for: thou art my hope euen from my youth. 6 Through thee haue I ben mayntayned euer since I was borne: thou art he that toke me out of my mothers wombe, my praise shalbe alway of thee. 7 I am become as it were a monster vnto many: but my sure trust is in thee. 8 Oh let my mouth be fylled: with thy prayse and glorie all the day long. 9 Cast me not away in the tyme of age: forsake me not when my strength fayleth me. 10 For myne enemies speake against me: and they that lay awayte for my soule take their counsayle together.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Let them be confounded,.... See Psalms 70:2;

[and] consumed; like smoke; see Psalms 37:20; as antichrist will be with the breath of Christ's mouth, and the brightness of his coming, 2 Thessalonians 2:8;

that are adversaries to my soul; that hated him with a diabolical hatred, as the devil hates the souls of men, and who has his name "Satan" from the word here used; all wicked men are Satans, full of enmity against God, and all good men; and such were David's enemies, spiteful and malicious, and nothing would satisfy them but his life;

let them be covered [with] reproach and dishonour; as with a garment:

that seek my hurt; see Psalms 35:26; as Absalom and his company; so Arama.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Let them be confounded and consumed - See the notes at the similar passage in Psalms 35:4. The sentiment in this verse is the same; the language is slightly varied. See also Psalms 40:14, where the same sentiment occurs.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Psalms 71:13. Let them be confounded — They shall be confounded: these are prophetic denunciations.
