¹³ They brought to the pharisees, hym that a litle before was blynde. ¹⁴ And it was the Sabboth day when Iesus made ye claye, & opened his eyes. ¹⁵ Then againe the pharisees also asked hym, howe he had receaued his syght. He sayde vnto them: He put claye vpon myne eyes, and I washed, and do see. ¹⁶ Therfore sayde some of the pharisees, this man is not of God, because he kepeth not the Sabboth day. Other said: How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a stryfe among them. ¹⁷ They spake vnto the blynde man againe: What sayest thou of him, because he hath opened thyne eyes? He sayde, he is a prophete. ¹⁸ But the Iewes dyd not beleue the man, howe that he had ben blynde, and receaued his syght, vntyll they called the father and mother of hym that had receaued his syght: ¹⁹ And they asked them, saying: Is this your sonne, whom ye saye was borne blynde? Howe doeth he nowe see then? ²⁰ His father & mother aunswered them, and sayde: We knowe that this is our sonne, and that he was borne blynde: ²¹ But by what meanes he now seeth, we can not tell: Or who hath opened his eyes, can not we tell. He is olde inough, aske him, let him aunswere for himselfe. ²² Such wordes spake his father & mother, because they feared the Iewes: For the Iewes had decreed alredy, that yf any man dyd confesse that he was Christe, he shoulde be excommunicate out of the synagogue.

They brought to the Pharisees,.... That is, to the sanhedrim, which chiefly consisted of Pharisees; and so Nonnus calls them the priests and chief priests:

him that was aforetime blind; to be examined by them. And something like this is the method used by carnal relations and friends, who when they have any belonging to them under a work of grace, have them to their learned doctors of a different religion, to talk to them, and dissuade them from the ways of truth and godliness.

Verse John 9:13. They brought to the Pharisees — These had the chief rule, and determined all controversies among the people; in every case of religion, their judgment was final: the people, now fully convinced that the man had been cured, brought him to the Pharisees, that they might determine how this was done, and whether it had been done legally.
