Contextual Overview

10The cowboys all returned and were telling the tales of the trail. They rode off by themselves to a place near Bethsaida so Jesus could talk to 'em. 11Word got around that Jesus and his boys were out there and a whole mess of people showed up. Jesus welcomed them and gave them some clinics on how to ride for God. He even healed a bunch of the sick. 12Late in the evening, the twelve cowboys came up to Jesus and said, "Send these people home so they can get some vittles. There ain't nothing to eat around here." 13But Jesus said, "Y'all feed them."The twelve cowboys all looked at each other, and one of them said, "All we got is five biscuits and two pieces of fish. You want us to lope into town and grab about five thousand cans of beans or what? 14That's how many it'll take to feed all these folks."Jesus smiled and said, "Have folks sit down in bunches of about fifty." 15The cowboys tallied the groups and did as the Boss said. 16When this was done, Jesus took the five biscuits and two pieces of fish and looked up to heaven as he said grace. He then tore them all apart, and the twelve cowboys put the pieces in their hats to pass around. 17Them hats never run out of vittles, and everyone had their fill. When they got done, the twelve hats were still full.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the people, when they knew it,.... Having heard of his departure from others, and seeing him go off themselves:

followed him; not by ship, but on foot, going over the bridge at Chainmath of Gadara, and got thither before Christ and his disciples did:

and he received them; very kindly, and in a very affectionate manner, and with great respect, though they had prevented the private interview between him and his apostles;

and he spake unto them of the kingdom of God; of the Gospel dispensation, now setting up, and of the doctrines and ordinances of it, of the governing principle of grace in the hearts of his people, and of the glory of the world to come:

and healed them that had need of healing; for their bodies; as well as preached the doctrines of grace for the good of their souls; he both taught doctrine and wrought miracles.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Luke 9:11. The people - followed him — Observe here five grand effects of Divine grace.

1. The people are drawn to follow him.

2. He kindly receives them.

3. He instructs them in the things of God.

4. He heals all their diseases.

5. He feeds their bodies and their souls. See Quesnel.

Reader! Jesus is the same to the present moment. Follow him, and he will receive, instruct, heal, feed, and save thy soul unto eternal life.
