He gave 'em all power to whip demons and cure cankers and cancers. ²He then sent them out to tell everyone the good news about God's outfit. ³He told 'em, "Just take what you need and nothing else. Don't take a pack horse or even saddle bags. Don't stick any money into the bottom of your boots for emergency and don't even take your slicker. ⁴When people are glad to see you, stay at their place until you leave. ⁵If people are unfriendly toward you, then leave that ranch and shake the dust off your boots, so you don't spread their hate around." ⁶So Jesus dropped 'em off at different points on the first gatherin', and they gave clinics on the good news and how to ride in God's outfit. The cowboys healed folks from all over. ⁷When Herod, the fellow who ran the area of Galilee, heard about all these things that were happening, he started getting a sinking feeling because folks were saying that John the Baptizer had come back to life. ⁸Still other rumors were saying that Elijah had returned. The stories also included that it was another long-dead cowboy of God who was doing all of this. ⁹When receiving a report one day, Herod stated, "I cut the Baptizer's head off. But if it ain't him doing all these miracles, then who could it be?" And Herod wanted to see for himself this man named Jesus.

Then he called his twelve disciples together,.... The Persic version reads, "all his twelve disciples", the other nine, besides the three that were with him, when he raised Jairus's daughter, recorded in the foregoing chapter; the Vulgate Latin, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions read, "the twelve apostles", for so Christ had named his disciples; :-. The Syriac version only reads, "his own twelve"; and this is agreeably to Luke's way of speaking; see Luke 8:1.

CHAPTER IX.

Christ sends his apostles to preach and work miracles, 1-6.

Herod, hearing of the fame of Jesus, is perplexed; some suppose

that John Baptist is risen from the dead; others, that Elijah

or one of the old prophets was come to life, 7-9.

The apostles return and relate the success of their mission. He

goes to a retired place, and the people follow him, 10, 11.

He feeds five thousand men with five loaves and two fishes,

12-17.

He asks his disciples what the public think of him, 18-21.

Foretells his passion, 22.

NOTES ON CHAP. IX.

Verse Luke 9:1. Power and authority — δυναμιν και εξουσιαν. The words properly mean here, the power to work miracles; and that authority by which the whole demoniac system was to be subjected to them. The reader will please to observe:

1. That Luke mentions both demons and diseases; therefore he was either mistaken, or demons and diseases are not the same.

2. The treatment of these two was not the same:-the demons were to be cast out, the diseases to be healed. See Matthew 10:1.
